Film has always been considered as a record of reality, often compared to a sort of me-mory. The thrust here is to focus attention on the potential of forgetfgulness that fil-mic recording possesses – a potential which manifests itself in some visual modali-ties, in some uses of editing, in the choice of certain fictional themes more generally, in a noted relationship of film to “death at work”. Among a variety of examples, a specific atten-tion has been devoted to the systematic work, in this direction, of Shohei Imamura in his documentaries of the 1960s and 70s.
