The notion of rhythm is crucial in primitivist reflections and early twentieth century’s approaches. It covers at that period a large spectrum of interpretation, touching as much on musical field as on literature, visual arts, ethnology and politics. This article proposes to observe the polysemy of this notion by combining three texts published in the “Revue romande”. In these, Ernest Ansermet, Charles-Albert Cingria and Blaise Cendrars outline an ontological conception of rhythm, which unites original to universal.
