Sophie Tonolo, « Introduction »
Sophie Tonolo, “Introduction”
This issue, which coincides with the centennial of the birth of Amédée Carriat (1922–2004), rediscoverer and exponent of the work of Tristan L ’ Hermite (1601–1655), is the result of a colloquium held at the Limoges Francophone Multimedia Library in February 2022. It focuses on the lands of the two men of letters, examines the circumstances and stakes surrounding this phenomenon of revival, and proceeds to probe the notion of “literary history”, its ramifications, and its actors—readers, academics, publishers, anthologists, and bibliophiles in particular.
Keywords: Amédée Carriat, Tristan L ’ Hermite, literary history, anthologies, bibliophilia, reading.
Alain Génetiot, “Amédée or in praise of a reader”
Amédée Carriat was a tireless promoter of Tristan L ’ Hermite, praising the lyric poet and above all the sensitive and loving man in a sympathetic portrait that aims to endear him to modern readers. Although Tristan played a role in inventing the baroque style, Car 192 riat nevertheless favors a transhistorical approach by presenting the melancholic Tristan as initiating a modernity that, in opposition to classicism, brings him closer to Verlaine, another saturnine poet.
Keywords: Amédée Carriat, Tristan L ’ Hermite, interpretation, reception, baroque.

Claude Abraham and Wolfgang Leiner both promoted Tristan studies and were friends of Amédée Carriat. Their paths crossed in the 1960s in the United States, where they were teaching seventeenth-century French literature. Each became interested in Tristan ’ s work and stayed in touch when Leiner was appointed professor at the University of Tübingen. Their work has spurred Tristan studies in the United States as well as in Germany.
Keywords: reception of Tristan ’ s work, baroque studies, La Creuse, autobiography, Holocaust.
193Hélène Bilis, “What role for Tristan L’Hermite in North American research and teaching?”
This article takes stock of the development of Tristan studies in the United States since 1985, in the vein opened by the work of Claude Abraham, a friend of Amédée Carriat and instigator of research on Tristan L ’ Hermite. Tristan plays a discreet though steady role in these works, especially as a playwright and prose writer, despite changes in the teaching of French works. Initiatives are proposed that may expand the circle of Tristan readers in North America.
Keywords: state of Tristan research, teaching, United States, academic collaborations.

Sophie Tonolo, “Territorial rooting and literary history: Tristan L’Hermite and La Marche”
What is the point of territorializing an author, a literary production? What are the consequences and stakes of such an approach? Is the concept of “literary geography” relevant for an author like Tristan L ’ Hermite? It seems important to analyze Tristan ’ s work from the perspectives of his relationships to territory, landscape, and space, and the tensions between real places and sites of memory and imagination.
Keywords: territorialization of literature, literary heritage, literary geography, literary history, Tristan L ’ Hermite.
195Catherine Grisé, “Tristan L’Hermite: the lyrical subject in the ‘Ode à monsieur de Chaudebonne’”
After using several documents to establish the autobiographical character of the poem, this article attempts to answer the following questions: Who is the lyrical subject in this ode? Is it a real I or a fictional I ? What stance does the author adopt? What is its enunciative framework? What are the registers and modalities of this discourse? To what genre does this text that combines the occasional poem, intimist lyricism, and Marotic banter belong?
Keywords: Amédée Carriat, Tristan L ’ Hermite, lyricism, poetic genres, enunciation, poetry and autobiography.
Frédéric Martin, “Tristan and the Sainte-Marthes: Fresh looks at an initiatory encounter”
The young Tristan ’ s meeting with the Sainte-Marthe family, in Poitiers and Loudun, possesses an initiatory dimension: Scévole, the wise and erudite old man, embodies success both in belles-lettres and in the affairs of the kingdom. He appears as a counterpoint to the charlatan alchemist from the Page . By entrusting Tristan with the care of his library, he allows him to expand his knowledge and strengthen his literary skills. But does this initiation bring all the expected benefits?
Keywords: library, Tristan L ’ Hermite, literary sociability, initiation, apprenticeship, Sainte-Marthe, Le Page disgracié .
Emmanuel Bury, “The literary life of the provinces in the early seventeenth century: The examples of Guez de Balzac and Tristan L’Hermite”
The aim in this article is to see to what extent the juxtaposed paths of Tristan L ’ Hermite and Jean-Louis Guez de Balzac illustrate one of the specificities of literary life in France in the early seventeenth century: the combination of provincial roots and Parisian influence, made all the more complex by being woven into the heart of the networks of fidelity and service that bind writers to their patrons, princes, and grands seigneurs .
Keywords: literary history, provinces, Académie française, patronage, Louis XIII, François Maynard, Tristan L ’ Hermite, Guez de Balzac.
Bernard Teyssandier, “The book and its fables: The inscription of the monument in Tristan’s work”
In the absence of archives on the links between Tristan L ’ Hermite and his publishers, as well as the painters and engravers who contributed to the publication of most of his texts, what can be inferred about the relationships of this Parisian man of letters (a gentleman living in the world but indifferent to its financial affairs) with books and their materiality? The poet ’ s participation in “gallery books” offers an ideal vantage point to study the way the idea of the monument can be understood in Tristan ’ s work.
Keywords: classical age, architectural imaginary, painting gallery, editorial monumentality, ethics of the monument, rhetoric of the monument, print culture.
Marine Le Bail, “‘And you speaking pages,/ Who preserve our names for posterity’: The place of seventeenth-century poets in the literary history of bibliophiles”
In the nineteenth century, the rise of bibliophilia was accompanied by the development of a publishing sector for amateurs. These two activities are asserted as modalities of re-evaluation, even rewriting, of institutional literary history. We wish to examine the role of seventeenth-century poetry within this bibliophilic literary history, and to question the critical topos that consists in seeing this century as a period when poetic activity began to wane.
Keywords: bibliophilia, classicism, collecting, publishing, literary history, poetry.
Maxime Cartron, “Amédée Carriat and anthologies of Tristan L’Hermite’s work”
In his historiographical reflection on Tristan ’ s work, Amédée Carriat gives pride of place to anthologies. For the critic, anthologies give an indication of literary history ’ s gradually evolving reception of Tristan ’ s work. But Carriat also shows that this genre reveals the 198 practices in this discipline. He ultimately situates this phenomenon in a history of mentalities, exploring the appropriation to which Tristan was subjected.
Keywords: Amédée Carriat, Tristan L ’ Hermite, appropriation, anthology, publishing, literary history
Serge Linarès, “René Rougerie, the publisher of Poésie présente”
This article intends to use broad strokes to depict René Rougerie ’ s publishing work, behind the apparent inconsistency of his decisions, and to demonstrate his adherence to a path which, starting from the case of Tristan L ’ Hermite, would lead to the contemporary after a step toward modernism. We will see an ethics forged by the ordeal of the Occupation and an aesthetics of the book whose sobriety lends itself to the reception of transitive poetics, more existential than experimental.
Keywords: Amédée Carriat, publishing, book, modernism, poetry, contemporary literature, resistance, journal, Tristan L ’ Hermite.
