Alain Chevrier, “The poissard intermetricity of Tristan Corbière’s ‘Litanie du sommeil’”
The author points out the typographic singularities of the “Litanie du sommeil” and its metric singularities concerning monorimy, heterostrophy, as well as the distribution of rhymes according to their gender and their number. After recalling the evolution of the poet ’ s strophic, and proposing a few intertexts, he presents a diptych extracted from ‘ catechisms poissards ’ , to which he confronts the litany of Corbière. Religious litanies, even if they were parodied, thus gave way to a forgotten genre of popular and carnival literature, which the poet could appreciate: the poissarde apostrophe.
Keywords: alternation, carnivalesque, gender, monorimy, poissard.
Notes, staves and keys”
Emblematizing a certain tradition of Romantic expressivity, dolorism, in Corbière ’ s works, includes the poetic transmission of pain. In “À une demoiselle” this is accomplished through the cacophonic evocation of a demoiselle ’ s piano keys which are depicted in a (violent) comparison with her false teeth. In this jarring juxtaposition, there emerges a parodic form of musical telegraphy, a sentimental song of discord and disharmony – and more if the feeling is(n ’ t) right (success guaranteed).
Keywords: keyboard, hippopotamus, scales, solfeggio, syphilis.
Gabrielle Veillet, “From parrêsia to litterary rage. Corbière and Ducasse and the poetics of artificial (laughter)”
This article explores the poetic affinities between Corbière and Ducasse, two “infréquentables” who claim and stand by an artificial creation born of the necessity to embrace the cynical “real life”. Deliberately choosing to embrace a dog ’ s life, they condemn the picturesque affectation of their predecessors and refound the poetic sincerity on a writing of the assumed factice. Breaking up with the mimesis, this very writing redefines the values of the truth as those of the laughter.
Keywords: Ducasse, cynism, dogs, artificiality, mimesis, laughter, originality, Baudelaire.
Fanny Wilson, “The Italian cycle, a poetic itinerary to prison”
After two journeys in Italy, Tristan Corbière published a saritical cycle in La Vie parisienne in 1873. A metapoetic reflection on “the sun, sleep and death” comes outof this micro-cycle within Amours jaunes. This triad seeks to discredit the romantic eloquence and the painters who exhibited their works in 1836. Italy, land of exile for the poet, and for many other strangers, welcomes his refined thought about freedom, and in contrast about prison, as a metaphor for women. Does the poet overcome these antithesis and reach the light? Might men’s bitter solitude be the only way to reach it?
Keywords: Italy, sun, sleep, death, irony, prison, woman.
396Romain Debluë, “‘Body for Soul’. Tristan Corbière’s foreign body”
In this article the author explores the mind/body connexion in the work of Corbières, through the relationship between the notions of identity and difference, of the same and the other. The central hypothesis of the present paper holds that in Corbière ’ s poetry the body always constitutes an obstacle to the unification of, appropriation of, or reunion with the self. The body is indeed perceived here as that which is foreign to oneself even within oneself. Corbières never misses an opportunity to do exactly that in order to better stage, belittle and ridicule it. The soul, on the other hand, is seen as the force that allows me to belong to myself, to hold myself together in spite of the constant fragmentation of the matter. Corbières ’ poetry is above all engaged in an existential debate with the Christian possibility of the resurrection of the body, that is to say of the salvation of the body; a body taken back, appropriated and integrated in the identity of a person at peace with its materiality. One ’ s very own body, at last.
Keywords: body, soul, self-appropriation, spirit, matter, resurrection.
Sandra Glatigny, “Literature and caricature. From the Amours jaunes to the ‘Album des Communards’”
From literature to caricature, we find the same transgressive approach. The diversion from the standards of classical drawing is similar to the subversion of language in the collection of the “pittore-poëta”. However, Corbière pushes this logic in a way that blurs the principles of caricature to the point of modifying its functioning. The originality lies in the axiological and affective hesitation produced. The dialogue between text and image often takes place in the mode of conflict, clouding the modalities of reception.
Keywords: intermediality, transgression, metatextuality, reception, caption.
Coralie Roser, “Some Musset hidden in Corbière’s works”
Tristan Corbière is a great reader of Alfred de Musset ’ s poetry, that he quotes and sometimes even parodies. This presence is not always easy to identify with certainty, for both poets share common literary references. Parodies Corbière made of Musset led researchers to perceive him only as a target, although regarding irony, Musset is also one of Corbière ’ s models. Musset ’ s name is often used all along Les Amours jaunes, because of the comic poet connotation it carries. This inspiration doesn’t prevent Corbière from using the master’s tools against him.
Keywords: Tristan Corbière, Alfred de Musset, irony, lyricism, intertextuality.
Jérôme Hennebert, “Satirical proper nouns in Les Amours jaunes”
Linguistics has restricted the proper nouns to its function of designation, but literary onomastics proves on the contrary the importance of the anthroponymic meaning. Also 398 the extraordinary dissemination of the proper nouns “Bob” and “Pudentiane” among others serves the satirical purpose of Tristan Corbière to denounce sexual hypocrisy. This study therefore proposes to analyze in Les Amours jaunes the stylistic force of proper nouns, their hypersemanticity, for caricatural purposes.
Keywords: poetry, Tristan Corbière, onomastics, stylistics, proper noun, satire, allegory, antonomasia, paragramme.
Massimo Blanco, “Corbière – out of his own birth”
Corbière adopts a corporeal and aggressive register for traditionally elevated poetic objects. These modifications seem motivated by two intentions. On the one hand, the desire to unleash the animalistic orality of the cosmos. On the other, the author aims for the rupture, the cracking, the dismantling of the compact. Two needs alternate: to divide and to penetrate, to disjoin in order to move forward.
Keywords: gesture, birth, surface, writing, painting, Rembrandt, father.
399Alain Chevrier, “‘Epitaph’. A typical example of the liberated strophic of Tristan Corbière”
This article of poetic morphology explores the singularities of the strophic of Corbière from a topical example. If the heterometric stanzas, the heterostrophy, the repetitions of rhymes, relate to the ancient use of rhymes or mixed verses, the interstrophic non-alternation in gender, and, more rarely, the intrastrophic one, are idiosyncratic. The intermetrical relations with popular poetry are evoked, and with that of his contemporaries, showing his splendid isolation.
Keywords: alternation, gender, heterostrophic, interstrophic, Piron.
