Closer to the eldest of the brothers J.-H. Rosny as the youngest, Octave Mirbeau rubbed shoulders with the two-headed writer for nearly twenty years. The two men met regularly in literary salons, banquets, as well as in court, then at the Académie Goncourt. In his Mémoires, J.-H. Rosny elder blows hot and cold when he evokes the memory of his friend. However, a careful study of the various publications of these testimonies reveals the work carried out behind the scenes, in order to refine a portrait closer to the image he wanted to convey of Mirbeau.
