By adapting Mirbeau’s novel, The Diary of a Chambermaid, filmmaker Benoît Jacquot focuses on the issue of emotions. Indeed, the bourgeoisie, represented by Mr. and Mrs. Lanlaire, ensures that the servants do not express any of their emotions. In vain, however, because Celestine and Joseph are crossed by affects and passions, unspeakable to some.
