This article studies the meanings and functions of the blasphemies, swear words, and oaths which pepper the Théâtre de Clara Gazul. Springing from comedy and anticlerical satire, they simultaneously reveal the ideals of energy and freedom which constitute the power of Mérimée’s theatre.
