A polemic between Louis Dumar and Jules de Gaultier concerning Nietzschean philosophy took place between 1908 and 1909 in the pages of the Mercure de France. A reading of this exchange in the context of the early-twentieth-century reception of German philosophy allows us to evaluate the extent to which Dumur’s interpretation marks a rupture with or prolonging of his contemporaries’ views.
