The Hispanic literary world was among the first to highlight the importance of Lautréamont’s work. This pioneering recognition continued with the first Spanish avant-garde movements (Creacionismo and Ultraism) but without the same enthusiasm. While the Ultraist Guillermo de Torre was very critical of Les Chants de Maldoror, poets who embraced surrealism openly acknowledged their debt to Lautréamont: García Lorca, Hinojosa and the most Lautréamontian of them all, Aleixandre.
