Joseph Bleumsteim remains, along with Joseph Durand, one of two unidentified dedicatees of Isidore Ducasse’s Poésies. Gérard Touzeau reviews the research and shows that there are consistent indications that one Jean Bleumstein—born in Buenos Aires in 1858 into a wealthy family from Switzerland, a pupil at the Lycée Impérial in Pau from 1864 to 1866, and an inhabitant of Neuilly-sur-Seine in the last years of the Second Empire—was more than likely the future friend of the author of Les Chants de Maldoror.
