This essay deals with the reception of Ducasse’s work in Italy in the first half of the twentieth century, focusing on three moments: the dissemination of Lautréamont through the avant-garde journal Lacerba, Montale’s poetic experiment using the Chants from a “symbolist” point of view, and finally two articles by Giuseppe Ungaretti, who examines the origins of the Chants using a “surrealist” reading.
