Are there any witches in Brazil? The depiction of Indigenous women in french travel narratives (16th–17th century)

This article studies the image of the indigenous woman, symbol of a double otherness through the colonizer’s gaze – because she is a woman in an Indigeneous society – in four travel narratives in America (J. de Léry, A. Thevet, Y. d'Évreux, C. d'Abbeville). I compare the narrative structures used by travelers to describe the Indigeneous people and I look for the connection that these descriptions have with the image of the witch as transmitted by the treatises on demonology.
