A recently unearthed poem by her, excoriating Hugo Grotius for seeking to reconcile Protestants and Catholics, queries this view. Analyzing the poem and its context lets us probe her conflict about engaging in religious controversy. Her conflict’s resolution occurred when she found, in her last decade, a new polemical voice in joining the leadership of the radical Reformed movement led by Jean de Labadie.
