Looking at Music and Magic Nicole Oresme and Évrart de Conty

Nicole Oresme and Évrart de Conty wrote about music and magic in the 1370s. Évrart was inspired by Oresme; both showed that music influences both body and soul, inducing passion and healing. However, their perspectives differed. Oresme chiefly aimed to shed light on the imposture that magic represented; he used music as a model for analysis. For Évrart, music was the keystone of his world vision, whereas magic represented nothing but a curiosity.
