The essay examines some of the ways in which Giacomo Leopardi's lyric L’infinito has been reused and rewritten during the twentieth century and up to recent years. Attention is focused above all on the phenomenon of the "fictional Leopardi", analysing in particular two texts: Primo Levi's short story Dialogo di un poeta e di un medico (1977), and Tiziano Scarpa's drama L'infinito (2012).
