This article studies the multiple variations on the « Baudelaire condemned »: the process of Fleurs du Mal in August 1857; the shift of the notion of condemnation to the one of damnation; his conception of the death penalty, confronted with the one held up by Joseph de Maistre and Victor Hugo. The essay also presents the manuscript of a rediscovered version of Épigraphe pour un livre condamné, which entails a variation in its title : Épigraphe / Pour un livre condamné en 1857.
