Nodier’s importance to the emergence of the fantastique is well known. However, he seems to have been excluded from the general theory of this literature genre and is often confined to the status of a simple marker in French literary history. The comparison drawn with Tolkien shows that renewing research in comparative literature would allow us to give him his rightful place in the theoretical reflection on the European fantastique.
