Concepción Palacios Bernal, “By way of an introduction. On Charles Nodier’s reception in Spain”
This article uses a three-pronged approach to studying Nodier’s fortunes in Spain. First, it analyzes the author’s presence in the Spanish press, particularly in the nineteenth century. The second part offers an overview of published translations of his works. Lastly, this article presents studies devoted to the author, noting that both translators and Spanish scholars have favored his fantastic stories.
Keywords: reception, press, publishing houses, research, translation.
238Pilar Andrade Boué, “Reading Nodier in Spain. Translations of Mademoiselle de Marsan”
Translations of Mademoiselle de Marsan were slow to appear in Spain, with the first one not published until 1924. This delay in relation to the date of publication of the original (1832), however, ensured that they were read by a wide audience accustomed to the codes of the Gothic genre. In fact, Calpe, Bruguera, and popular magazines (Jeromín, Revista literaria) published translations by Paulino Masip and Enrique Sordo, differing considerably in their strategies, which are analyzed in this article.
Keywords: Mademoiselle de Marsan, Gothic novel, Illyria, Paulino Masip, readership.
Pedro Baños Gallego, “Smarra’s (mis)fortune and its translations in Spain”
Here we will try to account for the lack of translations and reissues of Smarra in Spain. Our hypothesis is based on the generic classification of the text. Like many short narrative works in the nineteenth century, Smarra combines different genres. We consider this to be the main cause of publishers’ lack of interest in Smarra compared with more classical texts.
Keywords: Smarra, reissue, prose poem, genre theory, short story, nineteenth-century literature.
Francisco González Fernández, “Rebuilding Bohemian castles in the Spanish sky, or how I translated one of Nodier’s books”
Nodier conceived his Histoire du roi de Bohême as an exemplary novel. Together, its vignettes inserted in the text, its calligrams, and its self-referential allusions all emphasize its very condition as an object. Translating a novel whose singularity only a facsimile would be capable of rendering, therefore, proves to be a tricky and even chimerical undertaking. This article aspires to recount the adventure of this publication in the hope of showing Nodier’s novel in a new light.
Keywords: translation, publishing, constraints, typography, illustrations, calligrams, self-reference, game.
Inmaculada Illanes Ortega, “The Spanish translations of La Combe de l’Homme mort”
This chapter offers a catalogue and a comparative analysis of the eight Spanish translations of La Combe de l’Homme mort (1833) that appeared in journals or collections between 1855 and 1997. Analyzing the different versions shows that variation is mainly found in the tone of the narration, which allows us to identify a certain evolution in the translation approach, primarily geared toward updating the narrative in order to maintain its fantastic effect on readers over time.
Keywords: fantastic story, publications, variants, reading effect, short story.
Pedro S. Méndez Robles, “Nodier in the journal Semanario Pintoresco Español”
This work deals with the reception of Charles Nodier in the journal Semanario Pintoresco Español (1836–1857). By looking at three translations that appeared in 1854 and 1855: La hermana Beatriz: Leyenda, La gruta del hombre muerto, and Bautista Montauban: Cuento, we analyze the French author’s presence in the journal. Why were three stories by Nodier translated in a publication that focuses on national culture and literature? Why the choice of these texts? These are the questions we try to answer.
Keywords: short story, fantastic, press, Semanario Pintoresco Español, nineteenth century.
El desván de los duendes, a collection of stories translated and published by Eustasio de Villaseñor y Acuña, contains the story El Mercader de Léon, a 241translation of Histoire de Thibaud de la Jacquière, inserted in the Manuscrit trouvé à Saragosse by Potocki, and Les Aventures de Thibaud de la Jacquière from the volume Infernaliana attributed to Charles Nodier. The different circumstances surrounding the composition of these stories are analyzed as well as their formal and thematic differences.
Keywords: comparativism, fantastic, nineteenth century, anonymity, short story.
Concepción Palacios Bernal, “Did Zorrilla read Nodier? On Margarita la tornera and La Légende de Sœur Béatrix”
This article deals with the study of two narratives that make use of a trope from hagiographic literature, that of the flight of a nun from the convent and her replacement by the Virgin. We examine whether Zorrilla, author of Margarita la tornera, made use of Charles Nodier’s story, La Légende de Sœur Béatrix. To do so, the article analyzes the different sources of this trope and the similarities and differences of the stories in question.
Keywords: comparativism, religious literature, Zorrilla, nineteenth century, legend.
Concepción Palacios Bernal, “On the translation of Charles Nodier’s Trilby o el duende de Argail published in Cordoba, Imprenta y Papelería Catalana, (without translator’s note and anonymous)”
This article presents the first Spanish translation of Charles Nodier’s famous fantastic story Trilby ou le lutin d’Argail. The translation, anonymous and probably published at the end of the nineteenth century, is, in general terms, quite complete and reflects the interest in Charles Nodier’s fantastic tales in Spain. It was published as a stand-alone narrative, although most later translations of this tale are found in compilations.
Keywords: fantastic, anonymity, nineteenth century, Scotland, short narrative.
Inès de Las Sierras is one of Nodier’s most translated tales in Spanish, but it is also the only one that is supposed to take place on Spanish soil. We will try to compare some of the most striking translations from a number of different perspectives: the paratext (title and illustrations), the historical-political context (the occupation of Catalonia by the French army), and the treatment of the fantastic.
Keywords: fantastic, castle, illustration, tale, Franco-Spanish War.
Thierry Grandjean, “Smarra unmasked and its etymology revealed for the bicentennial of the tale”
Nodier plays with the etymology of the names of his characters, challenging scholars to get to the bottom of cryptic onomastic references. This is the case with Smarra, a creature born of his verbal fancy. Since 1821, the secret of this name has remained buried. By placing the term smarra in its cultural context and going back to its proto-Indo-European origins, we can unmask Smarra and reveal its etymology, based on oneiric activity, etymology, and entomology.
Keywords: onomastics, comparative grammar, etymology, oneirism, entomology, fantastic bestiary.
