The adaptation of Les Trois Mousquetaires for the theater can be understood in close consultation with the text from which it is drawn: the adaptation is based on a principle of fidelity to the source text, which allows for the recognition of the latter by the audience and brings them pleasure. Significant modifications of the plot and the economy of the characters, however, focus attention on some basic patterns.
