Morgane Avellaneda, “Literary criticism at Le Conservateur littéraire in relation to Le Conservateur: Continuity or legacy?”
When the Hugo brothers created Le Conservateur littéraire in 1819, they fell under the patronage of the ultraroyalist periodical Le Conservateur. A line of filiation connects the two titles in terms of literary criticism; however, many aspects of this would suggest a criticism that brought more freedom to the appreciation of literature. Le Conservateur littéraire does not deny that it is the offspring of Le Conservateur: the young literary review appropriates its legacy to establish its authority in literary circles.

Patrick Berthier, “Gautier rewatches Chatterton and Le More de Venise, or a critic’s nostalgia”
Le More de Venise (1829) and Chatterton (1835) are two of Vigny’s dramas that Gautier, who saw them when they debuted, could not talk about at the time because he was not yet a drama critic. But he had the privilege of seeing them again, notably much later during the Second Empire: his creator, Geffroy, reprised the role of Chatterton in 1857 (without Marie Dorval), and the inspired incarnation of Othello by the atypical Rouvière in 1862 provided him with the opportunity to take emotional stock of his youthful romantic passions, which remained intact.

Guillaume Cousin, “The shadow of Cinq-Mars: Vigny in the first Revue de Paris (1829–1834)”
Despite its importance, Vigny never once published in the Revue de Paris between 1829 and 1834. No doubt he did not want to have an article printed with his name on it, which the Revue required at the time. But this was only a partial absence because the Revue covered each of his works, which were always compared unfavorably to Cinq-Mars. Vigny was expected to write a new historical novel or a true historical 181drama, and there were those who lamented that he did not make more use of his talent as a painter of the historical.

Étienne Kern, “A note on the tutoiement and vouvoiement in Chatterton”
In addition to the issues raised by the question of pronouns of address in theater, this study looks at the Quaker character in Chatterton. Chatterton, faithful to the practice established by George Fox in the seventeenth century, addresses his interlocutors with a familiar thou (tu). However, in the final scene, we detect a twofold breach in this pronoun mechanism: he begins to address Kitty and then John Bell with a formal you (vous). Rather than seeing it as negligence on the part of the author, surely one must make sense of this shift to you, especially since it would be advantageous to compare it to Chatterton’s shift from you to thou with Kitty.

Sylvain Ledda, “La Confession d’un enfant du siècle, Servitude et grandeur militaires: From the press to literary history”
Both are personal works characterized by the intimate experience of the authors and both present certain characteristics of romantic disenchantment. Returning to the reception of these two narratives in the press, we see that critics have brought to light aesthetic specificities that have caused literary history to see a game of comparisons perhaps to the point of distorting the singularity of the two works.

Caroline Legrand, “Lorenzaccio and Chatterton: Two initiatory dramas”
The romantic nineteenth century saw renewed interest in the Middle Ages, producer of epic cycles and romances of initiation. With Chatterton and Lorenzaccio, drama becomes initiatory in turn. A comparative study of the two plays reveals a similar archetypal pattern: it suggests a theatrical transposition of the traditional codes, patterns, and literary models of initiation. But true to the pessimism of the century and of their authors, Lorenzo and Chatterton emerge in all respects only as heroes of failed quests and failed initiations.
