Bloy’s article about À rebours marks the beginning of his friendship with Huysmans. Their friendship is based on the same hatred for contemporary society, sharing the same financial troubles and a common taste for black humor. Although this friendship ends with a falling out, Bloy and Huysmans would not have become what they were had they not been, along with Villiers, three desperate men united by the bond of friendship.
