An enthusiastic reader of À rebours, Bloy sees in it an analysis of the spiritual issues of the time and a cry of rebellion against materialism. Starting in 1887, however, he felt that this religious anxiety, unable to take the step of saying yes to God, was subsequently lost in the surrounding nihilism.
