Le mythe d’Arthur et la conquête anglaise des côtes galloises (fin du xiiie siècle)
Du roi légendaire au roi colonisateur

  • Publication type: Article from a collective work

  • Abstract: After two wars, the English king Edward I eventually conquered Wales in 1283. He decided to mark his territory with the building of new castles in northern Wales. It seems that his ambition was to set up Arthurian-like constructions in order to show himself as a new Arthur. These castles also worked as instruments of colonisation in a recently conquered area: Gwynedd. The English castles of Wales were instruments of architectural propaganda.
