Can boredom lead to barbarism ? It is with this question and intuition in mind that G. Steiner wrote Dans le Château de Barbe-Bleue (In Blue Beard’s castle). Might we conceive of the relationship between boredom and barbarism as one of causality? From an epistemological point of view, could we explain the 20th century camps with the spleen that is so tangible in 19th century European literature ?
