Helena Sanson, “Introduction. Women and Translation in the Italian Tradition: From the Renaissance to the Present”
The Introduction traces a brief history of the relationship between women and translation within the Italian cultural and linguistic tradition, outlining the different chapters in the volume chronologically to cover from the last decades of the fifteenth century until the present day. Highlighting the need for further archaeological explorations of the contributions and roles of women in the history of translation in Italy, it suggests possible paths of future scholarly research.
L’Introduzione traccia una breve storia del rapporto tra le donne e la traduzione nell’ambito della tradizione culturale e linguistica italiana, presentando cronologicamente i diversi capitoli in un arco temporale che va dagli ultimi decenni del Quattrocento ai giorni nostri. Evidenziando la necessità di ulteriori approfondimenti sul contributo e sul ruolo delle donne nella storia della traduzione in Italia, vengono suggeriti possibili percorsi di ricerca futura.

Luca Zipoli, “Translation as Transformation: Gender and Religion in Antonia Pulci’s Rappresentazione di Santa Domitilla”
This chapter focuses on Antonia Pulci, who is said to be the first woman translator in Italy to have her work printed. Against the background of late-fifteenth century Florence, it explores Pulci’s negotiation of her own voice within a male literary environment. By means of a close-reading of her Play 436of Saint Domitilla and a comparison between this translation/adaptation and her sources, the chapter shows how Pulci reshaped these works from a female perspective.
Susanna Braund, in collaboration with Caterina Minniti, “Female Networks and Virgil Translation in Sixteenth-Century Siena”
This chapter investigates the role of elite women in sixteenth-century Siena as the dedicatees of a major translation project undertaken by a group of men associated with the Accademia degli Intronati, including Alessandro Piccolomini. They rendered Virgil’s Aeneid into the vernacular in a multi-authored translation, I sei primi libri (1540). The genesis of the volume and the nexus of interconnections between the female dedicatees and the male translators is rooted in the Piccolomini family.

Eleonora Carinci, “Chiara Matraini traduttrice. L’Oratione d’Isocrate a Demonico (1556) e altri scritti”
Isocrates’ oration To Demonicus, nowadays recognized as spurious, was well known in sixteenth-century Europe by means of a number of Latin and vernacular translations of the original Greek. In 1556, the poet Chiara Matraini published in Florence her translation from Latin into Italian of the text. This chapter explores her Oratione d’Isocrate a Demonico and her activity as a translator, against the wider background of her literary production and the cultural network in which she operated.

Helena Sanson, “Two Nun Translators in Seventeenth-Century Italy: Angelica Baitelli and Maria Stella Scutellari”
The role of women translators in early modern Italy has received less scholarly attention than in other cultural traditions, yet some women actively contributed to the field of translation, often doing so for the benefit of other 438women, or for the less learned. Against the background of the varied and complex linguistic situation of the peninsula, this chapter focuses on translation within the convent walls, and in particular on the works by Angelica Baitelli and Maria Stella Scutellari.

Martina Piperno, “‘Mon propre travail’. Cristina Trivulzio Belgiojoso traduttrice e interprete di Giambattista Vico”
Vico et ses œuvres is the title that Cristina Trivulzio Belgiojoso gives to her introduction to her translation of Vico’s New Science (La Science nouvelle, 1844). This chapter analyses Belgiojoso’s work in dialogue with some of her models and episodes of its reception. The analysis focuses on the paratext as the ‘protected’ space where the female translator – who is criticized for her intellectual activity as a woman – can articulate her ideas and position herself in current debates.

Iulia Cosma, “Italian Women Writers in Translation: An Overlooked Chapter in the Cultural History of Nineteenth-Century Romania”
The Romanian translations of Italian women writers of the second half of the nineteenth century is still unexplored territory. Their novels and short stories appeared mainly in literary magazines, some of which were founded by the publisher and entrepreneur Luigi Cazzavillan, a promoter of the Italian language and culture in Romania. Neera, Serao and Invernizio became relatively well known to the Romanian public, whereas Ada Negri found a refined interpreter in the poet Alexandru Vlahuță.
442Caterina Paoli, “Translating Virgil at Age Sixteen: Giovanna Bemporad’s Bucolics”
The chapter examines Giovanna Bemporad’s unpublished translation of Virgil’s Eclogues. By comparing Bemporad’s translation (1939) and Giuseppe Albini’s translation of Le Bucoliche (1926), it discusses Bemporad’s translation methodology. Far from being a juvenile attempt, Bemporad’s translation, which she worked on at the age of sixteen, represents a first poetic dialogue with Virgil, a source of poetic inspiration and an aesthetic and existential mentor for her own work as poet and translator.
Teresa Franco, “A Voice for the Partisans: Natalia Ginzburg, Translator and Writer in the Post-War Years”
A prolific writer and insightful chronicler of Italy’s political turmoil during fascism and the post-war years, Natalia Ginzburg was also a fine translator.
