Going beyond the sharp sense of polemic characteristic of Joseph de Maistre’s style, this study reveals the coherence of his religious thought by situating it within its intellectual and spiritual context. It also outlines the posterity of Maistrian theology in the late eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth century.
