Adaptations of Honoré de Balzac’s work continue to proliferate in various media. But interest in adapting Balzac’s fiction is by no means new. This introduction argues that Balzac was himself a writer who adapted. It also asks how theoretical models such as intermediality can contribute to our understanding of Balzac and of adaptation as an artistic practice.
