Eugénie Grandet by Marc Dugain (2021) The Low-Key Nineteenth Century or the Intimacy and Feminism of Historical Drama

The mise-en-scène of the film Eugénie Grandet (Dugain 2021) is sober and “low-key.” This type of representation characterizes the presence of the nineteenth century onscreen, such as in Wuthering Heights (Arnold 2011), Une vie (Brizé 2016), or The Wonder (Lelio 2022). This study proposes an analysis that will take into consideration, beyond the generic field of adaptation, the more general question of the “period drama” set in the nineteenth century.
