Andrea Del Lungo and Takayuki Kamada, “Introduction”
These opening remarks introduce the central question addressed in this issue of The Balzac Revue/Revue Balzac regarding the publishing of Balzac ’ s work, considered in its dual dimensions of production/dissemination in the original era and subsequent transmission. We explore the historical and symbolic stakes, the relationship with readers, and the current contributions of digital technologies. The piece ends with an overview of the different contributions to this collective work.
Keywords: completeness, genetics, digitization, repertory, variation.
Pierre Laforgue, « (Il)lisibilité de Balzac ? »
Selon quel ordre lire La Comédie humaine ?
296Pierre Laforgue, “The (un)readability of Balzac?”
What order should La Comédie humaine be read in? There are three possibilities: based on the chronology of the fiction, its composition, or its publication. None of these orders is entirely satisfactory, and, in the end, the idea that Balzac ’ s work might be unreadable begins to emerge, since this work unceasingly decomposes and reconfigures itself. It is therefore futile to seek a definite answer. Paradoxically, unreadability is the condition and the means of a true Balzacian reading.
Keywords: genesis, publishing, mosaic, reading, order (of La Comédie humaine).
Takayuki Kamada, “Publishing Balzac’s preparatory documents. Elements for review and future prospects”
This study aims to reassess the issues associated with the publication of Balzac ’ s preparatory documents (notes, manuscripts, corrected proofs), which are likely to be enlightening on different levels regarding the genesis of his work, but which, without it, would not be especially accessible. Our aim is essentially to undertake a historical examination of the most successful editorial interventions on the material, in order to reconstruct the state of the available documents and to outline the work to be executed.
Keywords: publishing, programmatic study, genetics, inventory, digitization.
Isabelle Mimouni, “Is Balzac still readable? Or how to publish him for a wider audience”
The reading of Balzac by a non-specialist audience raises both specific questions and issues related to the accessibility of a “classic.” As with any encyclopedic author, the abundance of (sometimes obsolete) knowledge accentuates the difficulty. Moreover, the overall organization of the works in La Comédie humaine deprives the casual reader of the background needed to understand it: this leads to a proliferation of footnotes even if this means contradicting Balzac ’ s intentions and the logic of the fiction.
Keywords: non-specialist audience, readability, erudition, annotation, augmented text.
Melanie Conroy, “Thinking Literary Systems. Print and Digital Databases of Balzacians”
“Guides” and “repertories” have been part of Balzac studies since the nineteenth century. Because of the systematicity of Balzacian thought, these traditional specialist tools anticipated in many respects the logic of the digital humanities and, at the beginning of the twenty-first century, included databases structured in the form of reference books.
Keywords: repertories, guides, digital humanities, digital, cartography.
298Thomas Welles Briggs, “Incomprehensibility Reduced. The Digitization of Balzac Resources”
While it is impossible to digitize or understand everything, we are still enormously privileged compared to our predecessors. We can make digitized trips to libraries, museums, and (with a credit card) bookstores around the world. Even counterfeits can be useful to us. Now the digitization of resources on Balzac as well as those by Balzac can help us better understand and interpret the text.
Keywords: counterfeit, incomprehensibility, law, Mirouët, digitization.
Andrea Del Lungo, “The eBalzac digital edition. A new reading of La Comédie humaine”
La Comédie humaine, a network text, anticipated the practice of hypertext links and provides ideal yet complex material for digital publishing, which must confront several problems: the size of the work, the definition of its table of contents, the relationship between the whole and the part, and the evolution of the text over the course of its 299genesis. This article provides answers by looking at the digital publishing experience of the eBalzac website, which aims to open up new avenues of reading.
Keywords: digital humanities, variants, table of contents, hypertext, reading.
Rudolf Mahrer and Joël Zufferey, “Variation in the modern text. From the variant to the digital edition”
Our contribution analyzes the effects of the variant, as a philological notion and as an editorial practice, on the representation of texts. With the example of La Peau de chagrin (1830–1845), captured in the philosophical turn of its third edition (1833), we illustrate the capacity of the digital edition (in this case the Variance collection) to represent each version of a work in its singularity and in its processes of post-editorial invention.
Keywords: post-editorial genesis, variation, rewriting, digital humanities, written enunciation.
Martin Shields, “Balzac, Business as Metaphor for the Unpredictability of the Political and Socio-economic Transformations of Near-History”
300This paper scrutinizes the business world in La Comédie humaine . This world becomes a metaphor for the unpredictability of social transformations, a battlefield of risk and immorality, which Balzac uses to express his ironic vision of contemporary society and near-history. A rise in moral fluidity pushes the boundaries of post-Romantic individualism, against a backdrop of social mobility and the rise of the stock market.
Keywords: business, unpredictability, individualism, near-history, immorality.
Kristina M. Roney, “A Tale of two Bankruptcies. César Birotteau and La Maison Nucingen”
The diptych structure of these two works presents the story of two bankruptcies, told in two different manners and about two men who differ from one another in every way: social class, ideology, and morals. But while the lesson for the individual underlines the importance of probity, it also calls into question the laws of society. By situating these two novels within the socioeconomic and sociopolitical theory of neoliberalism, this study presents Balzac as a capitalist and neoliberal avant la lettre .
Keywords: bank, bankruptcy, finance, neoliberalism, probity.
301Ilaria Vidotto, “Revisiting a Genettian Balzacism. Linguistic form and stylistic values of the naming trope‘X, that Y of Z’”
This contribution revisits a styleme that Gérard Genette once referred to as a Balzacism , namely the naming trope “X, that Y of Z”. After a formal description of the trope, revealing its stylistic significance, we look at examples taken from La Comédie humaine and analyze in particular the didactic and hyperbolic value of the expression, as well as its contribution to the consolidation of the novelistic universe and to the construction of a point-of-view effect.
Keywords: proper name, apposition, metaphor, designation, stylistics.
