In Les Martyrs ignorés, Balzac seems to have the intuition that there is an aspect of emotions that goes beyond corporeal boundaries: feelings can kill more readily than a dagger. Our reading sees in L’Enfant maudit the manifestation of a specific form of this thought of emotion that manages to kill particularly sensitive beings. Moreover, it is a matter of describing a closed universe where the irrepressible force of the unconscious invades the dimension of affective relations.
