From Anarchism to Faith Two Disconcerting Metamorphoses in the Voyages extraordinaires

This article examines the variations on Captain Nemo in three works written by Jules Verne between 1868 and 1882 and notes a gradual reduction in the original ambiguity of the character in favor of emphasizing his religiosity. An analogous transformation is reproduced in short form in the character of the Kaw-djer in the posthumous novel En Magellanie, which can be understood as a novel with a social and political thesis.
