The romanesque and explanation Zola’s psychological romanesque in Une page d’amour

The spectrum sketched out by Gérard Genette in his article “Vraisemblance et motivation” could be further developed with the case of a narrative that refuses to make a character’s motivations explicit, in this case Zola’s Une page d’amour. The novelistic power of such a narrative may lie in its muting of explanation and analysis—or perhaps its transferal, since the scenography in particular is what becomes a peculiarly novelistic remedy for the aporias of the psychological novel.
