In the volumes that form the Dernier Royaume, Pascal Quignard does not appear to conceive of the apparent solitude of the author and the work as the product of a reactionary ideology, but rather as the desire to return to unordered forms of knowledge. The work would then illustrate not an otium reserved for some educated elite, but a form of “critical radicality,” based on a heterodox use of knowledge and a dissensual imaginary of the community.
