Opera in Justine and Juliette? What an incongruous idea! On closer inspection, however, the theatrum mundi that Sade wishes to stage does not lack allusions (remembrances? intentional references?) to the lyric theatre: the opera is not absent from his works, sometimes in the form of satire, sometimes in the form of borrowed scenery. Whether presenting analogies or, sometimes, revisions of episodes, the Sadean universe indeed seems to manifest an operatic dimension.
