By placing humans and animals in the same “ark”, Zola indicates their similarity. Concentrating on horses in Les Rougon-Macquart lets us demonstrate the way in which the novel uses anthropomorphism to create a sense of the familiar. Yet by displaying the suffering inflicted on both humans and animals, the work also presents their common origins, and touches on the fundamental myth of humanity. We can thus interpret the cry and gaze of the animal as a sign of an awareness of death.
The tendency to anthropomorphise in Michelet’s natural history can seem surprising. Rather than see it as poetic licence or a sign of the time, however, the double movement through which Michelet invests in his subjects needs to be analysed. It is,
first, an identification with nature which restores a sense of community and enables cognitive empathy, and, second, a mastery of anthropomorphism which endorses his mission to speak on behalf of animals.
The collections of animal novels written by Louis Pergaud at the beginning of the twentieth century amount to an essay in animal psychology which is profoundly opposed to the Cartesian postulates of a separation between human and animal, and any specificity of animal suffering. Instead of reproducing an ideology in which suffering animals do not feel, Pergaud renders intense effects of internal focalisation in order to convey the terrors of Margot the magpie, captured and tortured to death by humans.
In this third-person retrospective account, Claude Louis-Combet links the sadism of the child towards the animal with an anguished and contradictory interrogation on generation: the sexual power of the animal calls for an identification but also a punishment, which stems from the moral and religious censure the child imposes on him or herself. From the living animal, observed in childhood in its sexual plenitude, emerges the writing animal, intimately linked to eroticism, suffering, and the infinite quest for origins.
Claude Louis-Combet’s tales abound in animal figures and are also, given the sexual vigour with which the animal is endowed, tales of the animalisation of the human body, in particular the female. These tales reanimate the mythical copulations of female and animal through the very movement of writing, which comes close to the act of bullfighting as defined by Leiris. Yet copulation is above all an inner fusion with the animal, a metamorphosis of the woman herself in all its transgressive power.
By developing what Glissant has called a “writing of relation”, Chamoiseau attains a synthesis of both species and sense in the novel. His writing makes use of allegory, a way for postcolonial literature to think about unknown origins without getting entrapped in a discourse of opposition. Allegory incorporates three necessities – abstraction, anonymity, and distancing – which un-writes history by decentring the human. It can also give speech to the voiceless animal: here, the Malfini chronicles its evolution.
In this hunting novel of 1938, Genevoix enters the viewpoint of a stag and the context in which it perceives and acts. Preferring the psycho-account to an animalistic inner monologue, he conveys the terror of stags and deer during a hunt, and the sensory amazement of the stag on its escape. Attentive to the spatial memory of animals, verging at points on anthropomorphism, this novel evokes an intelligent way of being in the world and can be read in relation to work on animal psychology.
Describing the silent pursuit of a stag by a man, this novel from 1979 explores the meaning of the trace, its inscription in a whole for which it alone is a fragment, and the way in which it leads the hunter himself into a trap, before he abandons the idea of killing and effacing the trace. Based on the rapport between narrative and hunting knowledge (Ginzburg), this novel insists on the difficulty of detection; the superiority of prayer, even divination, over knowledge; and the way in which, ultimately, the hunter ends up pursuing his own truth.
Antoine Traisnel, « Palafox-terrier – Heidegger suivant Chevillard ».
Chevillard’s Palafox is an unimaginable, unclassifiable, and relentlessly pursued animal who ultimately takes the place of the narrator and human in the chase. It is tempting to compare this novelistic labyrinth to the Concepts fondamentaux de la métaphysique. Through his resolutely circular reasoning, and his vocabulary, Heidegger ends by dismantling his initial thesis concerning the ontological superiority of human over animal.
The male elephant Wong and the female elephant Marta Ashkarot appear in Nos animaux préférés and Onze rêves de suie by Antoine Volodine. The novelist avoids the exotic and colonial imagery linked to the elephant in the same way that these animalistic micro-fictions escape the generic codes of the fable, short story or novella. The elephant bears witness to the extinction of the human species and becomes the ultimate promoter of an equality which the survivors, trapped in their ideological proclamations, are practically incapable of putting into practice.
In Un chien mort après lui, J. Rolin sets off in search of the feral dog, a problematic case of the domestic dog which has returned to its natural state, and turned away from humans. In this well-documented investigation, Rolin undertakes a real etho-ethnology which examines the relationship between humans and dogs over time. Above all, his research, focusing on conflict zones from the last twenty years, exposes the mystery of the wild dogs’ return, and casts new light on the human war on strays.
