Lilly Sauter, first translator of Romain Gary’s works into German

The Austrian translator Lilly Sauter has made a significant contribution to the knowledge of Romain Gary's work in German-speaking countries since the late 1950s. On the basis of her unpublished correspondence, this contribution first discusses the specific context of the rediscovery of French culture in the German-speaking world in 1945, before focusing on her translation of Les Racines du ciel (Die Wurzeln des Himmels, 1957) and of La Promesse de l’aube (Erste Liebe, letzte Liebe, 1961).
