In 1997, Jean-Jacques Lefrère discovered the sonnet-dedication “À Paul Verlaine” by Gabriel Marc in the readers’ letters of a 1911 edition of Annales politiques et littéraires and presented it in the Revue Verlaine. As the sonnet, in fact dated March 1869, constitutes a remarkably early poetic homage to the Fêtes galantes, this article looks at Gabriel Marc’s personality and his relationship to Verlaine.
