The sonnet-like nature of three quatorzains by Verlaine The meaning and counter-meaning of formal duplicity

“Effet de nuit,” “L’Allée,” and poem IX of the collection La Bonne Chanson have in common with Baudelaire’s “Une gravure fantastique” the fact that they are the only occurrences of the quatorzain in their respective collections as well as demonstrating some form of relation to the sonnet. This article proposes that these quatorzains employ features of the sonnet that go beyond genre conventions in terms of unique effect and meter, and presents them as a hybrid global poetic form.
