Decrying the living and working conditions prevailing on the mining sites exemplified by the Belgian town, the poem may allude above all to Anzin, where a strike had just been squashed in July 1872, as well as to the President of its Board of Directors who was also the President of the Third Republic and the “sinistre” “fossoyeur de la Commune.”
