The « Studies of pathological literature » published by Arvède Barine in the Revue des Deux Mondes and collected in a volume entitled Névrosés in 1898 show the literary preoccupations for psychopathological introspection at the end of the century. With the examples of four writers (Hoffmann, Thomas de Quincey, Poe and Nerval) who suffered from alcoholism, opioid addiction or insanity, the critic questions the relationships between illness and genius.
