Alberto Manguel, “The fado of Doctor António de Sousa de Macedo”
Yielding to the suggestions of a street name in Lisbon, Alberto Manguel retraces here the forgotten history of Doctor António de Sousa of Macedo. In doing so, he implicitly repeats Nerval ’ s gesture, while expelling him elsewhere, and increases the lineage of “enlightened” nervalians with a new eccentric figure.
Keywords: António de Sousa de Macedo, the reading, Lisbon, wandering and writing, Alberto Manguel.
322Marc Décimo, “From the ‘literary lunatics’ by Nodier to the‘Illuminated’ by Nerval. From the ideological scope to the historico-fictional approach”
The term “literary madmen” or “literary lunatics” (“fou littéraire”) cannot be defined except as a function of the perspective taken to define it. It is, therefore, a dynamic notion requiring a diachronic approach. In this regard, two milestones have been identified. The first by Charles Nodier is characterized by its conservative position, while the second by Gérard de Nerval by its attempt at a historicization mixed with fiction. Today, the term “heteroclite” (regarded preferable) is used to refer to those individuals whose ideas contradict science.
Keywords: diachronic approach, ideological point of view, criteria of literary lunatics, utopian socialists, heteroclite.
Shuichiro Shiotsuka, “‘Imaginary lives’ of ‘literary lunatics’ at Nerval and Queneau”
We compare the treatment of literary lunatics in Nerval ’ s Visionaries with that in Queneau’s Children of Cray, from the point of view of the interest they take in the lives of madmen. The concepts of “literary lunatics” and “imaginary lives” allow us to understand that Nerval and Queneau took an interest in the gestures and opinions of marginal people to rediscover a hidden aspect of their personality and critically reconsider the society in which they lived.
Keywords: Raymond Queneau, Children of Cray , “literary lunatics”, Marcel Schwob, “imaginary lives”.
Henri Scepi, “Nerval in Les Fous littéraires by Gustave Brunet (1880)”
This article aims to study how Nerval is included in a typology that is characterized by the reversals that it permits as much as by the principle of uncertainty that it allows. We rely on the notice “Nerval” extracted from the work of Gustave Brunet Les Fous littéraires (1880), considered as an attempt at a systematic synthesis of the issues of literary madness as they have unfolded over more than half a century of capricious inventions and nosographic hypotheses.
Keywords: Fous littéraires , writing and madness, literature and medicine, positivism, Gustave Brunet.
Antoine Piantoni, “The circle of neurotic poets of Arvède Barine”
The « Studies of pathological literature » published by Arvède Barine in the Revue des Deux Mondes and collected in a volume entitled Névrosés in 1898 show the 324literary preoccupations for psychopathological introspection at the end of the century. With the examples of four writers (Hoffmann, Thomas de Quincey, Poe and Nerval) who suffered from alcoholism, opioid addiction or insanity, the critic questions the relationships between illness and genius.
Keywords: pathology, nosographie, ethics, biography, insanity, genius, Arvède Barine.
Virginie Tellier, “Nerval, Nodier and Francesco Colonna. The book, the journey, the madness”
In 1844, Nerval discovers the last tale written by Nodier, Franciscus Columna. This text is thus used to serve his own reading of Francesco Colonna Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, published in Venice in 1499. This paper aims at analysing the role of these two sources in the genesis of Nerval’s Voyage en Orient, whose beginnings can be traced back to 1844. Our study shows in which way the interlacing of those texts allows us to understand the meaning of the links established between books, travels and madness in Nerval’s poetics.
Keywords: Francesco Colonna, madness in literature, book, Nerval, Nodier, travelogue.
Emmanuelle Sempère, “‘The poet who believes in his fable’. Madness and fantasy in Nerval’s ‘Jacques Cazotte’”
What kind of madness is the eccentricity of the poet who ‘ believes in his fable ’ ? Fantasy and humour are perhaps what makes it possible to transform life into a work of art and the anguish of death into a “dream hatched from thought”. The poetics of the author of Ollivier and Le Diable amoureux is considered here as a keyto thereading of Nerval’s poetics in Les Illuminés and is related to the particular forms of Nervalian identification.
Keywords: Cazotte, mysticism, humor, banter, madness.
Jean-Luc Steinmetz paints a portrait of Berbiguier de Terre-Neuve du Thym, who was cared by Philippe Pinel, and who is considered by Queneau and Blavier as an archetype of the literary madman. This “romantic Schreber”, mentioned by Gautier, illuminates Nerval’s madness laterally, giving it a context not yet explored enough, and making feel, by backlash, the darkness from which is torn the grace of Aurelia’s writing.
Keywords: Berbiguier de Terre-Neuve du Thym, romantic madness, Pinel, Schreber, Freud et Lacan.
Corinne Bayle, “Enigma, poetry and truth, from Nerval to Bonnefoy”
The quest for “la vérité de parole”, common point of the work of Nerval and that of Bonnefoy, faces an aporia, the questioning of the artistic means at the heart of the language. Taking the example of two singular collection of poems, Les Chimères (1854) and Du mouvement et de l’immobilité de Douve(1953), this reflection postulates that the enigma is a response to this fundamental concern inscribed in the very act of writing.
Keywords: Yves Bonnefoy and Nerval, poetry, enigma, poetic truth, preciousness.
Jean-Marie Privat, “The Daughters of Fire or the lost aura of orality”
Our study focuses on Angélique and Sylvie. After having established the omnipresence of the culture of writing in these stories, we underline the tendency to devalorize it and, concurrently, the extreme valorization attached to oral culture. We then analyze the textual and plotting of these profuse orality. We conclude our anthropological and linguistic exploration by scrutinizing the ways in which Nerval’s writing seeks this lost aura of a lively and shared orality.
Keywords: Nerval, The Daughters of Fire , ethnocritique, linguistic and cultural anthropology, orality, written culture, aura, writing.
Sylvain Brocquet, “Le Chariot d’enfant, by Joseph Méry and Gérard de Nerval, and its Indian source”
In 1850, Méry and Nerval staged Le Chariot d ’ enfant , based upon the French translation of an English translation of Ś ūdraka ’ s Mṛcchakaṭikā. The Indian play will be presented, with a comparative synopsis of the two plots, then the way the French writers made use of it will be investigated, between moderate fidelity and radical alteration: why, while making an adaptation, do they claim to be “translators”? An attempt will also be made to account for the paradoxical lack of Indian exoticism in the play, which arguably is related to Nerval’s ideas about aesthetics.
Keywords: Le Chariot d’enfant, Śūdraka, The Little Clay-Cart, Mṛcchakaṭikā, Sanskrit, India, Orientalism, Romanticism.
Vincent Mugnier, “Situation of Nerval’s India. A furtive oriental purity”
Although India does not occupy a quantitatively important place in Nerval ’ s work, this geographical and symbolic space nonetheless has a precise function. Cradle 328 of humanity, India seems to be the bearer of an underlying critique of bourgeois and Christian Europe, on a geopolitical as well as religious and aesthetic level. The disquieting strangeness of the imaginary of India serves to remind 19th-century France of its pagan vocation.
Keywords: India, Romanticism, Fabre d ’ Olivet, Tippoo-Saib, philology, counter-power.
Guillaume Dreidemie, “Nerval and the return of the gods”
The aim of this article is to question the place of the eternal return in Nerval ’ s work, starting from the sonnet “Delfica” and the earlier versions of this poem. By deploying a cyclical conception of time, inherited in part from Pythagoreanism, the poet predicts the return of the gods. Everything indicates that this return remains in suspense: in a very Hölderlinian imaginary, the sleep of the “ancient seed” refers to the sleep of paganism, whose power can be awakened by the poet.
Keywords: Nerval, eternal return, time, initiatory journey, pythagorism.
329Gabrielle Bornancin-Tomasella, “Aurélia, a theater of madness”
Endorsing the perspective of visual studies, the article explores Aurélia ’ s permeability to the techniques of optical and theatrical shows of early 19th century – stage sets, panorama, diorama and polyorama in particular. We demonstrate how these techniques, exogenous to the autobiographical genre, are turned by the writer into a tool for clinical analysis.
Keywords: Aurélia, madness, theater, optical shows, diorama, panorama, optical boxes, polyorama, enunciation.
Takeshi Matsumura, “On two Nervalian allusions to Villon”
In his works, Nerval makes several references to Villon. I propose to examine, on the one hand, how one should interpret Villon, le villonneur featured in The Enchanted Hand . It is probably not a common name villon , but rather a reference to a novel by Paul Lacroix. On the other hand, when in the Voyage to the Orient he associates the old moons and snows of the past year with the medieval poet, the author is probably basing himself on an invention of Charles Nodier.
Keywords: Gérard de Nerval, François Villon, Paul Lacroix, Charles Nodier, lexicography.
