Rimbaud’s influence on Maeterlinck’s poetry is an established fact. Many poems from the collection Serres chaudes, published by Maeterlinck in 1889, are reminiscent of some poems found in Rimbaud’s Illuminations. Some verses of Le Bateau ivre seem to come back to life in an early essay of Maeterlinck. What is even more surprising are the echoes of some enigmatic Illuminations in the essays of a more mature Maeterlinck whose later works suggest that he found a way to move beyond the metaphysical failure of Rimbaud.
