The article sheds light on the creative process of Ungaretti’s third collection, Il Dolore (1947). The disorder characteristic of his poetic creation is here exacerbated, and we follow the course of some images, such as the Araucaria, the Brazilian tree that represents the dramatic incarnation of the mutilated tree of his very first collection. Friction replaces harmony, but the poetic material of Il Dolore will later feed into La Terra Promessa.
