A major figure in the Italian avant-garde, Ardengo Soffici played a key role in propagating the modern ideas he had discovered in Paris. Convinced of the fruitfulness of Cézanne’s teaching for young Italian artists, Soffici endeavoured to make the French painter better known in Italy through his articles and the Florentine exhibition organized by La Voce in 1910. Indeed, Cézanne’s pictorial lessons were for him a means of realizing the essence of painting, and probing the soul of reality.
