According to a common interpretation during the Ventennio, Mussolini embodied the Veltro prophesied by Dante. He himself did not publicly claim this status, but used the Divine Comedy in his own way. He presented it as the “poem of the civil war” to legitimise the violence of the Fascists and refute the thesis, put forward by his opponents, that the violence of the regime would be incompatible with the great cultural production that he hoped for.
