Pavese’s interest in Dante’s work spans the entire life of the author from Santo Stefano Belbo. After his youthful passion, Dante becomes more and more an essential term of comparison for Pavese, and it is no coincidence that he will play a central role in the articulation of Pavese’s reflections around the symbol. Lastly, his influence is profoundly reflected in Pavese’s last novel, The Moon and the Bonfires, of which he can rightly be considered the “anti-model”.
