This paper aims to discuss the meanings of the word and the concept of nobility in Dante’s achievements, from the Dolci Rime to the Commedia. The author intends also to consider and comprehend their tangled reception during the Fourteenth Century, especially in Bartolus de Saxoferrato’s treaty on nobility. The historical and the historiographical contexts of Dante’s works and of his aristocratical as well as urban insight are highlighted in these pages.
