Jean-François Melon, one of the first French scientific economists, had a remarkable political and intellectual career during the first third of the eighteenth century. A Bordeaux resident close to Montesquieu, he was influenced by the success of Les Lettres Persanes in writing his first essay on economics, borrowing the genre of the oriental tale in Mahmoud le Gasnevide.
