Luc Fraisse, “Proust writer of the Belle Époque”
Though the author of À la recherche du temps perdu did not aspire to be a mirror image of his era, Proust is so associated with the Belle Époque that many are only familiar with him through exhibitions and festivals celebrating the period. Yet Proust placed his hero in a traditional Catholic family, and he depicts provincial village life with as much detail as he does Parisian life. This “frivolous” period also produced a wealth of philosophical thought, the substratum of which, in À la recherche , constitutes the last reserve of the nineteenth century.
Keywords: study of mores, bourgeoisie, high-society culture, literature, philosophy.
760Cynthia Gamble, “Proust and Anglomania at the time of his translations of Ruskin”
A backdrop of Anglomania and Anglophilia frames Proust ’ s work as a translator of John Ruskin ’ s Bible of Amiens (1904) and Sesame and Lilies . This Anglophilia manifested itself through his choice of clothes, holidays on the Normandy coast, his reading, his friends and acquaintances, and his outings to numerous art exhibitions (Sickert, Whistler, and the Bing gallery). All these elements constitute a rich tapestry whose threads intertwine in À la recherche du temps perdu .
Keywords: Normandy, history of art, Émile Mâle, Whistler, clothing fashions.
Stéphane Chaudier, “Proust and the roman mondain of his era”
Can À la recherche du temps perdu also be considered a roman mondain and if so, to what extent and why? Drawing on pioneering work into literary snobbery (Carassus) and the roman idéaliste (Seillan), this study attempts to define the roman mondain in the period around 1890 based on an analysis of the novels of Maupassant, Bourget, and Prévost. By reconstituting this forgotten tradition, this article shows the extent to which Proust took up and transformed roman mondain conventions.
Keywords: snobbery, roman idéaliste , Maupassant, Bourget, Marcel Prévost, high society.
Cécile Leblanc, “Proust and musical societies. A listener of his time”
Concert societies played an important role in Parisian intellectual and social life by making German and French music accessible to a wide audience: during these soirées, Proust acquired a profound knowledge of music, rendering the din of salons (like an “aviary”) unbearable to him. His oeuvre contains numerous traces of the significant role these societies played. The linking of Vinteuil ’ s sonata with the Tristan heard at a Lamoureux concert is the most tangible proof of this.
Keywords: music, Lamoureux, Pasdeloup, Concerts Colonne, Wagner, Beethoven.
Matthieu Vernet, “Preparing the readers of his era. The pre-publications of Proust”
Proust accompanied the publication of each volume of À la recherche du temps perdu with slightly earlier pre-publications, accompanying discourse, extracts, and even more ambitious articles. Far from neglecting the context surrounding publication, the novelist took great care in laying the groundwork and preparing his potential readers for the arrival of his work. These publications also allowed the writer to highlight elements of his work that he considered salient and shape the way the books would be read at the time.
Keywords: publicity, journalism, reception, horizon of expectations, reading.
Pierre-Edmond Robert, “À la recherche du temps perdu: Speech of characters, speech of its time”
The characters in À la recherche du temps perdu reveal themselves through their speech, specific to their time. According to Daudet, Proust still classed them according to the criterion of “louchonneries”—a colorful neologism used to dub a clichéd expression so ridiculous it will make you squint ( loucher ). In this social satire, we see sociology in action and hear people talking about their profession, including diplomacy (with Norpois). An article by Auguste Gauvain is emblematic of the wartime journalism that we read in Le Temps retrouvé , as we read in the philosophical terminology of À la recherche du temps perdu that of its era.
Keywords: louchonnerie , Lucien Daudet, Auguste Gauvain, language, sociolects, study of mores, Belle Époque.
762Jean-Marc Quaranta, « Un geek 1900.
Jean-Marc Quaranta, “A geek in 1900. Marcel Proust and technological innovation”
Far from being isolated in his ivory tower, Proust was a man attuned to his time, as evidenced by his use of technological objects. The way he described the relationship his characters had toward technological innovation can be linked to current research into the social psychology of innovation. Proust, by providing such unexpected technological details, makes innovation and technology a veritable subject of novelistic analysis.
Keywords: aviation, automobile, telephone, speed, social psychology, study of mores.
Marisa Verna, “Proust and the smell of his era”
Until now, critics have shown little interest in the bouquet of aromas and scents that permeate the linguistic fabric of À la recherche du temps perdu , to the point of forming an olfactory (and cognitive) underlay. The aesthetic impact of these odors warrants further investigation, starting with a reconstruction of the “problem of smell” in Proust ’ s Paris. The treatment of smell in the novel seems, in fact, particularly subversive, against the backdrop of the physical and cultural atmosphere in which the novel was conceived and published.
Keywords: smell, sensory culture, breathing, miasma, 1900s Paris.
Mots-clés : présentisme, histoire, mémoire, énonciation, temps grammaticaux, W. Benjamin, A. Ernaux.
763Isabelle Serça, “Proust and the present. Time that overflows”
Based on a linguistic definition of the term, here we examine the notion of the “present” in Proust ’ s work, showing how this “elastic” present, overflowing into both the future and past, pertains to the Proustian concept of time and memory.
Keywords: presentism, history, memory, enunciation, grammatical tenses, W. Benjamin, A. Ernaux.
Antoine Compagnon, “Proust and the Third Republic”
Born with the Third Republic, Proust inherited his family ’ s conservative and liberal republican sentiments, hostile to the popular expression of universal suffrage. His involvement in the Dreyfus affair was very real during the crucial years (1896–1899) and even if, like other notable figures in the Jewish community, he demonstrated hostility to the radical positions of former Dreyfusards, this was not a mark of anti-republicanism, as shown by his admiration for Joseph Reinach.
Keywords: Dreyfusisme, Judaism, republicanism, combisme , Bernard-Lazare, Barrès, Léon Daudet, Anatole France, Péguy, Zola.
Kazuyoshi Yoshikawa, “The First World War in Le Temps retrouvé”
In describing the war in Le Temps retrouvé through the words of people from different social classes, Proust was convinced that this was the only way to express “reality.” Reality is only perceived through our words and those of others, which are run through with contradictions and a sore lack of reliability. Because of its ability to express the universal this way, Proust ’ s novel, far from being reduced to the status of a historical document, is all the more relevant for readers today.
Keywords: air raids, censorship, Germanophobia, heroism, homosexuality.
764Nathalie Mauriac Dyer, « Le temps de l’écrivain. Proust contre Chronos »
Nathalie Mauriac Dyer, “Time and the writer. Proust against Chronos”
The writer ’ s time intersects with that of history: in the episode that he devotes to the First World War, Proust establishes a scale of writer ’ s values, in which individual memory figures above major collective events. His work relied on various subterfuges to slow down or subvert Chronos, including deletions, insertions, and the temporal syncretism of his patchwork of “paperoles” (scraps of paper folded and glued to the page). The oeuvre of his manuscripts, distinct from that of his published novels, also calls for an anachronic reading.
Keywords: First World War, temporality, history, writing process, manuscripts.
Jérôme Bastianelli, “Proust at the Académie Française in 1920. Hypotheses on an election that never was”
Based on what we know about the relationship between Marcel Proust and his contemporaries who were members of the Académie Française, this article examines the author ’ s chances of success if he had persevered with his plan to submit his candidacy for the election of June 3, 1920. This enquiry evaluates how the author of À la recherche du temps perdu was positioned in the literary world of the time.
Keywords: literary institution, alternative history, Barrès, Henry Bordeaux, Prix Goncourt, consecration.
Ilaria Vidotto, “Proust in 1923. A look at a homage”
The Nouvelle Revue française ’ s homage to Proust the day after his death consecrated the journal and its director, Jacques Rivière—whose mediation efforts succeeded in imposing À la recherche du temps perdu at the heart of a long-reluctant group—once and for all within the French literary scene. The analysis of the two sections that make up the homage aims to highlight certain salient elements regarding both the author and his work, as they appeared to his contemporaries.
Keywords: Nouvelle Revue française , consecration, Rivière, literary life, journalism.
Luc Fraisse, “Proust and the Jewish world: A link under discussion”
After so many studies emphasizing the link between Proust and his Jewish maternal ancestry, the focus here, from a new and fully objective historical angle, is on the phenomenon of the definitive assimilation of numerous Jewish families to the Catholic world, as it played out in the space of a generation from Jeanne Weil to Marcel and Robert Proust. The article gives a nuanced account of the various points of view concerning the Dreyfus affair, as well as the writer ’ s disengagement, despite his great empathy, toward the Jewish question.
Keywords: biography, Jewishness, Dreyfus, cultural assimilation, Catholicism.
