Simon Dagenais, “Filling in the blank: Annotations in widely circulated almanacs (seventeenth–nineteenth centuries)”
The blank pages interspersed throughout almanac calendars, including the Almanach de Mathieu Laensbergh encourage readers to annotate them and undertake writing that verges on the personal. Resembling an account log or family account book in more than one way, some authors note the weather and use their almanac in a manner similar to a diary. The annotations are influenced by the printed content of the almanacs, giving a glimpse into the private lives of their authors.
Keywords: almanacs, Almanach de Mathieu Laensbergh, wide-circulation literature, testimonial literature, private writing.
760Gillian Pink, “Voltaire’s writing, a survivor of history”
Some of the handwritten traces of Voltaire and other famous writers have disappeared while an astonishing quantity has been preserved by various means (purchase, bound text, paper folding, transcription…). The feeling of veneration underlying these preservation efforts can be situated in the context of a growing fetishization of secular objects in the nineteenth century, which has become more scientific nowadays.
Keywords: Voltaire, manuscripts, marginalia, conservation, fetishism.
Dominique Varry, “Investigating several pro- and anti-Jesuit lampoons from the 1760s”
This article discusses a few lampoons from the 1760s relating to the Jesuits. It stresses the difficulty of identifying pamphlets of a few pages, which are often poorly described by library catalogs. It shows the authorities ’ inability to fight back against banned brochures with the example of those by Georges Crotonel, which attacked the archbishop of Lyon. It depicts the activity of a lampoon writer, Taupin d ’ Orval, who was imprisoned for publishing verses against the king.
Keywords: lampoons, Jesuits, censorship, Georges Crotonel, Taupin d ’ Orval.
Alexis Lévrier, “The ambiguous contempt for ‘folliculaires’ in the eighteenth century”
The periodicals that appeared at the beginning of the eighteenth century were violently rejected until the revolutionary period. This hatred is explained in particular by the materiality of these newspapers: the Encyclopedists themselves judged these sheets to be too fragile and too ephemeral to be worth reading. However, this study 761 attempts to show that behind these expressions of contempt, there often lies a genuine fascination for the emerging power of journalism.
Keywords: imaginary of journalism, periodicals, press, Voltaire, Louis-Sébastien Mercier, Élie-Catherine Fréron, Pierre-François Guyot Desfontaines.
Marie Thébaud-Sorger, “Jean-Claude Pingeron, innovative and artistic eighteenth-century polygraph author”
This contribution studies the editorial strategies of the polygraph author Jean-Claude Pingeron, promoter of the inventions of his era, in order to consider how ephemeral literature and the rhetoric of improvement shaped each other at the end of the eighteenth century. Examining his output (brochures and articles) reveals the complexity of the paths traversed between manuscripts and printed matter and allows us to properly reacquaint ourselves with the importance of the progressive refinement of “arts utiles et agréables” (useful and pleasant arts) at the heart of his approach.
Keywords: Jean-Claude Pingeron, technical invention, curiosity, public good, regimes of authoriality.
Nicholas Cronk, “Voltaire and the brochure: The stakes of the ephemeral”
While the brochure is an ephemeral product, it plays a leading role in the literary quarrels of the eighteenth century. Voltaire ’ s predilection for this widely devalued medium allows us to discover a little-known aspect of his literary strategies, and testifies to his great mastery of the tools at his disposal to advance the cause of reason. This is not the least of the paradoxes of a man who otherwise venerated the great authors of the “siècle de Louis XIV.”
Keywords: pamphlet, brochure, Voltaire, literary quarrel, Enlightenment.
Jean-Alexandre Perras, “The ‘grand procès’ of the brochure and the bound text in the eighteenth century”
If the eighteenth century condemns the proliferation of these small ephemeral works called brochures, some like Caraccioli see them as a way to spread knowledge to a wider public, contributing to polite manners. Louis-Sébastien Mercier goes further, seeing in the pamphlet an ethical and aesthetic standpoint, which he contrasts with the deleterious and ghoulish effect of binding: the immateriality of the brochure is what allows the text to circulate and to continue to live.
Keywords: brochure, binding, ephemera, Louis-Antoine Caraccioli, Louis-Sébastien Mercier.
Élise Urbain Ruano, “The fashion press in the eighteenth century: an ephemeral subject for posterity”
The fashion press was born at the end of the eighteenth century, distinguishing itself from its two editorial models: beautiful and richly illustrated books and the news periodicals. Can we add to this the duality of the image of dressed bodies: perennial costumes or ephemeral fashions? From the Mercure Galant to the Monument du Costume, their authors have imagined ways to give an account of the relevance of a changing subject that fell out of favor faster and faster while they tried to capture it for posterity.
Keywords: costume, fashion, print, press.
Sonia Cherrad, “Pedagogue intellectuals facing public opinion in the eighteenth century”
This article aims to add a relatively little-known moment to historiography and literary history, one formed by the dialectic that female intellectuals established with public opinion in the second half of the eighteenth century. The dialogue focuses, on the one hand, on the moral and social stakes conveyed by the discourse on education and, on the other hand, on the moral stakes represented by a political reformation of European governments and, in particular, of the French monarchy.
Keywords: public opinion, literature, history, education, politics.
Michel Delon, “The poetics and politics of ruins, from Diderot to Germaine de Staël”
Long a simple vanitas, the ruin gradually becomes an archaeological object and a springboard for a meditation on history. As Diderot puts it, the poetics of ruins establishes a court of history, and posterity is worthy of public opinion. Volney makes the genius of the ruins predict 1789. Lezay-Marnésia and Grégoire respectively accuse the Terror and the monarchy of multiplying the number of ruins, while Chateaubriand and Germaine de Staël exalt the powers of the fragment and the void.
Keywords: Ruins, archaeology, painting, history, utopia, revolution.
Didier Philippot, “Hugo and the ‘farouche[s] architecture[s]’ du hasard”
This article focuses on Hugo ’ s musings on the fierce natural architecture (mountains, sea cliffs) produced by chance—sublime, shifting, dreamlike. What happens 764 to the architectural paradigm when a mysterious art of nature raises “monuments extra-humains” lacking an architect and foundation, exposed to the pressure of the infinite? How does one explain the existence of such seemingly anarchic architecture in travel as well as in fiction?
Keywords: Hugo, architecture, nature, chance, cosmology, novel, romanticism.
A paradox of literary polyglotism”
A journey drifts from religious belief to literary metaphor and ends up sometimes making death the traveler and, as such, the stranger par excellence. Camus ’ s L’Étranger does not turn its back on these traditional legacies but uses them in a paradoxical way, and the strangeness linked to the absurd offers only one facet of this contradictory novel, the woman, the most visible one, who gives it its title.
Keywords: Les Fleurs du mal, L’Étranger, death, navigation, polyglotism, travel.
Odile Hamot, “Scientific knowledge and poetic co-naissance in Aimé Césaire”
Aimé Césaire ’ s September 1944 lecture entitled “Poésie et connaissance” has received little critical attention. The present study aims to rehabilitate this rich text by a Césaire reflecting on the philosophical, anthropological and literary stakes of his poetry, through the opposition that emerges between a scientific knowledge whose powers are disavowed and a poetic co-naissance understood in its Claudelian strength and depth.
Keywords: Césaire, knowledge, science, primitivism, Claudel, poetry, anthropology, philosophy.
